Hello! Sharing along a bit of what I've been up to lately.

I've hesitated before posting my photos of the images/design work that I created for Etsy's presence at SXSW Interactive Week (last month), but I am super proud that I was able to contribute to the manifold efforts of my amazing co-workers. Seriously folks, there was so much excellence brought: crafting, laughing, synth-building projects, handmade code info sharing, rockin' music, Austin Etsy team spirit and, hands down, the best puppet show ever).

In awesome Etsy get yer hands dirty fashion, preparing these goodies was a massive silk screening, bookbinding, letter pressing and laser cutting super team endeavor.

I notoriously do not use patterns or if I do, they are hand drawn, vague and abbreviated. I pretty much torture myself with fine tuning and re-configuring and I leave myself in a bit of a pinch when needing to reproducing anything that I have made. Tomorrow, I'll be helping out with a little admin craft project at work. A little nervous, I decided to see if there was something simpler that I could find online, while offering some of my original (hopefully not too hard to follow plans) as well.

I confess, I spend plenty of time searching for images and objects that I once saw somewhere, especially when I'm feeling a bit lost creatively, as I do right now.

I happened upon Reuben Cox's website the other day and keep returning to look at his series "Everybody Wants to go to Heaven but Nobody Wants to Die". All his photographs are really excellent. I went to school with Reuben a scabillion years ago. hey.

I used to walk by Paula Hayes' studio early in the morning on East 13 Street in the East Village, here in NYC, when dropping off little ones for school. I was always making everyone stop so I could try and peek in the windows. I pined, I suppose I still do, for one of her terrariums. The are huger than you'd imagine and more stunning than you can see here. Lush and kind of wild, miniature encapsulated magical landscapes.

For an indeterminate period of time, the magnetized collector takes a daily walk through the streets and gradually builds up a coat made of any metallic residue in its path. This process goes on until the collector is completely smothered by its trophies. Francis Alÿs, The Collector (1990-1992)

I have had a post card of this image since...probably soon after the piece was completed. I find compelling the realized representation of all that becomes collected, the bits that become attached, as we go about our day. Truly, I feel a bit burdened and troubled by this as well, our paths traveling along with us, our journeys infinitely layered.

We super secretly surprise visited and picked up Lucia from her first summer working at her grandparent's beautiful bed and breakfast/restaurant, Cafe Cimino Country in in Sutton, West Virgina. The lush seasonal meals are loving prepared with locally grown produce (baked fresh bread, vegetables from the McColleys, amazing WV basket weavers) and the inn will soon be offering local artist's wares via Mountain Made.

This was the view from our room in the carriage house:

Go there. It is magical, splendorous, delicious and entirely relaxing. Wild and wonderful, almost heaven. It is all true.

Last Thursday evening, Etsy hosted a Crafty Blogging panel moderated by Danielle Maveal, Etsy's Seller Education Coordinator and... I'm a jerk for not letting you know!

We served up in large part, carefully (it was really nice to step away from my normal duties and be part of the shopping, prep and planning crew) chosen locally grown and crafted cheese, fruit and wine and laid out super tasty and decadent local Etsy seller sweets: Salty Sweet Fleur de Sel Caramel from carriemels.etsy.com and a mixed variety of cupcakes from Cakelab.etsy.com

My favorite part of getting ready was making the tissue paper pompoms that you can see in the photos above... they evoked both, I'm told, cherry blossoms and dying swans. The scale was fantastic though. They're huge! I recommend making them, as they are super easy to create (anyone who has ever made a tissue paper flower could rock this) and loosely based on this *example*. I just doubled the pom poms (using each as one half of the full sphere, and by tying together the two halves in the center) to make them extra pom pom-y and added fabric cut like ribbon for some added color.

Next event, I promise, I'll provide more info before hand and I'll hope to see you there!

Whoa! This is a skill I'm just going to have to acquire. While I spend my days happily answering emails at Etsy, I've left my inbox hanging. Yet again, I owe apologies. Forgive me! I have scant few hours away from a computer these days and haven't designated my email hour at home yet nor have I figured in any blogging hours either. I have to confess I've been feeling rather dull like I don't have much to say, anyway. So, I'll just share some pictures:

I just have to let you know that I saw this play with Lucia today:

THE WAISTMAKERS' OPERA
May 8 - 30, 2010
To be performed outdoors on East 4th Street, and neighboring areas of the Lower East Side.
Sat & Sun thru May 30
12pm and 2:30/3:30pm

and it was AMAZING! I'm not kidding people, I had to clench my fists all through the last act, the libretto beautifully staged in an outdoor courtyard (the first act we followed the actresses around NYC streets with mp3 players to hear the words and music the were dramatizing) to not break out in tears...okay I did cry! I was fighting against wails!

I know, I'm a mom, and that surely factors in here. We went to see and Lucia's friends in this and support the theater group L used to take part in but really, these young girls nearly broke my heart with their committed performances.

From the website:

"In 1909, sparked by events at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, more than twenty thousand garment workers, most of them young women in their teens and early twenties, launched an eleven week general strike in New York, the largest strike led by women. The story of these young women's brave effort has long been overshadowed by the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire which took place a year later. The Waistmaker’s Opera is a tribute to them, not as victims, but as remarkable and courageous young people. Composed by Michael Hickey, libretto and direction by Ryan Gilliam, performed by the teen company members of Downtown Art."

There are only two performances left 12 and 3:30 tomorrow, just sayin'

I'm super pleased to say that my animals are lurking in the downloadable (for a small charge) Faery Tale Deco Supplement's beautiful woodsy photo spread//photos by Justine Kerrigan.

I'm so excited by how my guys were rescaled and brought to life (and isn't that little girl just so beautiful?!)
The wolf should be making his way back home soon and the other animals used or considered for the shoot were borrowed from nearby Kido. Okay, that is it. I officially love Australians.

I'm mid-way through my first week as a full time employee of Etsy's Customer Support department. Opening an Etsy shop truly changed my life and I couldn't be happier to have joined the ranks of those busy assisting sellers and buyers. It is an amazing place to spend the work day and I am a super lucky lady.

I've been keeping this hush*hush in part because it all seemed too good to be true and honestly it still does! After I get settled, I'll be back to filling my astulabee shop. I'm looking forward to figuring out some new designs!

Thanks to all who came out last night! The Lost At Sea opening was packed and all of the artworks all looked GREAT! So wonderful and fun!
I do though owe apologies as I failed to:
1. get there at 7:00
2. stay until 9:00 (really, it was super crowded!)

My guy is working, unloading crates and installing art today at the Affordable Art Fair here in NYC. And just to share how silly we are, I've spent the last 40 min searching up lunch options for him in midtown. I found, just to show how silly all new yorkers are, that there is a whole blog actually dedicated to finding a decent lunch under 10$ dollars in the midtown zone. Check out this interactive map!

I vote that S goes for either yummy pre packaged rice balls, bento boxes or (more so!) take away fresh pre-packed Korean ... any bets on which he'll choose or will he punk out and hit the Chipoltle in the Empire State Building's basement ... hmm? hmmm!

Birthdays with Bruce!

Dear Bruce,
Yesterday everything started out great for Shawn's birthday. Coffee made, breakfast fixed, picnic packed, gifts wrapped, and historic boat tour tickets printed. All that was really left was to take you for a nice walk so you wouldn't get too antsy while we left for a few hours.
But it ended up being not so simple. Right, Bruce?
I thought twice, worried about the time, before taking you to the ball court and then hesitated before taking back off your leash, when we really were ready to go, to play with that nice puppy. I did though, indulge you, out of love... LOVE, dude!
And how did you repay the kindness?
Oh yeah... by bolting with your new friend, out of the park, down the block, across a street, and up another block. Bruce you crossed streets! Took lefts down others. You deftly navigated the neighborhood at whiplash speed. I left the mom of the other pup, who had a baby in carriage in tow, to scream your name and chase you but I was too slow.
Hauling puppy butt, you guys were GONE *Poof* disappeared within minutes!
Shawn was frantically called and we ran everywhere yelling your name trying to find you. Little did we know you were actually safely indoors by then. How nice of your new friend to bring you right to his building and how lucky that the front door was open so that he could show you around in there! Thank goodness the other pup's mom went home to just see if maybe you guys were there.
I'm sure you had a blast, Bruce, but I should let you know the neighbors that found you two crazed, darting wildly along the hallways didn't appreciate the ruckus! At least that is what the other pup's mom told me when we finally found you standing calmly with her back near the park.

Those frenzied 45 minutes amounted to us missing the boat ride. We had to substitute with a matinee showing of Hot Tub Time Machine (okay ... which was actually a w e s o m e). Sure your adventure gained you a new friend...there a possible play date in the works for next week and I guess your joy run gave a colorful start to Shawn's birthday and the birthday of Anita, the other dog's mom (we came to find it was her birthday yesterday too!!)but really we could have done without the panic! Oh Bruce, if there was an actual dog house here for you, you'd be in it!

I'll be teaching a 5 day Contemporary Soft Sculpture workshop July 16-20, this summer at The Peters Valley Craft Center in Layton, NJ and I couldn't be more excited. I'll be staying at the beautiful, bucolic Peters Valley for the duration, an art and craft getaway, believe me I am really super excited!

Here is the course description:

Contemporary Soft Sculpture is a hands-on studio workshop exploring materials and techniques for creating 3-dimensional soft sculptural forms, functional and non-functional alike. Together we will consider different ways of creating forms using simple methods of sewing and stuffing, embroidery and appliqué while focusing on the tactile qualities of the mediums chosen. Creative construction and sculptural possibilities will be emphasized. We’ll take a look at some inspiring examples from fine artists such as Eva Hesse, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, and Annette Messager as well as contemporary crafters’ works, dolls, and toys. Students will be able to set their own project goals and will be guided from a sketched idea to the selection of materials, pattern making, sewing /construction to a fully developed finished project. Our projects may droop, be fluffy, squishy or bent but all will surely endear and engage.

I'm juggling lots of projects underway and a tremendous head cold that just won't quit. It has really thrown off my routines (including posting!) But I have been taking time, peeking around catching up on others blogs and am getting excited for all the fun crafty events coming up this spring. It was just not in my budget to apply for Brooklyn Renegade this year but I expect it will be a GREAT one and I can't wait to run around and visit with so many I admire! I took just a second Wednesday morning to whip up a new bed for Bruce. I attached 2 cheap discount store pillows (Bruce is getting so big! At 30 lbs, definitely stretching out the definition of miniature!) and used some old stock corduroy I found while traveling in Pennsylvania this past December. Super simple and not tutorial worthy but a hilarious process to be noted. As soon as I laid out my materials, Bruce was all up on them, just rightly assuming this was all for him! Bruce + his new bed = love at first sight :)

Claire and Camilla have worked hard to pull together a great grouping you can preview *here* It will be a wonderful exhibit, but I'm sad to say my work won't be included, after all. Thanks to some customs snafus, it will be heading back to me. Ugh, never write 'artwork' or the true value of your work on customs forms, I guess, because it surely gums the whole shipping process up and adds tremendous cost to the recipient! ((I'm not really suggesting that one should fill in customs forms dishonestly ... but geez! Bah!))

Always just out of frame!

I read online a few weeks back a kindly response to a question regarding getting things done. The respondent suggested a reasonable plan for time management that used the idea of making a print for sale as the task to time manage, break down into steps. I like the person (in an internet presence way, but I don't know her) and she appears very productive. I hope I don't regret this, I know KNOW I shouldn't say anything but it has so seriously bugged me since I read it. It was so off the mark to me and I'm just unclear as to why this person used the example of designing an image, crafting a drawing...when they don't make any form of artwork at all. Needless to say I've exceeded the suggested 15 minute allotments on this collage drawing. I'm a bit peeved at myself for subconsciously buying into this quick fix fast track formula (I had hopes you can see in the post below). I could figure and reconfigure for days and then scrap it altogether, you never know. All I know is that it is nowhere near done. Things just don't always work out as planned (or planned at all). I think this (easy) idea of hurry up decide, make + sell competes too closely with all the dispensable stuff we're surrounded by already... I hope I am not offensive here. Making stuff is hard, I'm just saying.

Ahh rebellion... I'm taking the day off from sewing. I'm fighting some serious burnout and cramped fingers, achy wrists...bleeech! So rather, between exercising the healed full of energy pup in this beautiful weather, I'm working on these today ( and others just begun). It feels preetty freaking luxurious, I'll tell you. I'd love to offer these in my shop but I don't feel like making prints of them right now. At all. I mean I'll scan them... so maybe later... maybe. Aren't things just nicer as originals anyway? I'm just gonna put them up as originals later on this eve or tomorrow morning, when they are done... If they don't take a bad turn, which is entirely possible. Please tell me I am not wasting time (I have a big to do list...) Okay?

My field trips have been known to become endurance runs usually involving going to look at art, an endless wander, a sprinkle of errands and slight provisions. Oh woe, going off for the day with me, after fourteen years, has become something of an anticipated dread and then pleasant enough experience for Lucia. At least that is what I hear... anyway, we had a great time visiting arm in arm, leisurely taking advantage of free passes and free shuttle buses between, The Armory and Pulse Shows last Sunday.

I've been double tagged! First by the lovely everyeskimo offering a creative blog award (very flattering!) and asking for 7 random things about me and by sweet Mathyld (encorepetite) with a Happy 101 Blogger Award asking for 10 things that makes me happy (thanks M!)
Whew, I'm going to try and combine the two and share some of what has been going on around here with a bit of what is to come.
1.random... ms. everyeskimo I actually incorporated your newly found and highly prized industrial locker rack into my dreams last night. You might be happy to know it was in good company with an excellent yellow couch and a 'save a lady and son from bad guys' adventure saga.
2.happy... I very recently quit my day job. Though, I have to say it was a scant day job at that. After 6 years working as a teaching artist for a non-profit, I've resigned. Okay maybe this isn't so happy because receiving my 1099 from last year (hours and hours of work, worry and travel time amounted to a shockingly low sum) is what pushed me over the edge but relief from worrying and wondering when and if I'll get placed in a decent residency, in a school that is even interested, with a student population that is even remotely under control is pretty nice for now. These gems below are excluded from complaints above:

Happy too, I still really like kids. Love 'em.
3.random... I've taken to taking my puppy on his first of the day walk in my pajamas. Such are the ways of the shameless self-employed.
4.happy... I'm so lucky to have 3 sisters I adore.
5.random... My youngest sister made up crazy combo swears when she was tiny...6 or 7?
My older sister's boyfriend band's name Bitchneck (an excellent noise band, by the way!) is one of those creations. The others? perhaps too colorful ... uh... 'bitchintheass' for example. She made us laugh hysterically.
6.happy...I have been able to keep my end of things here afloat through astulabee efforts while I look for additional work. I'm really surprised and thankful and proud of this actually (even if I'm still not ready to 'quit my day job' and did not get hired for a job I really wanted and thought just might be a perfect match... not happy at all about that!) Still...I'm pretty amazed at my good fortune.
7.random...**I've changed this one** As I showed my daughter this video, she turned to me and said "Oh mom they sound just like you!" (seriously, she did!....she is Charlie btw)

8.happy...geez, I think I'm a bit blue or fried... and there has been a good deal of complaint mixed in here right? um...this is getting boring??
